Mission

The term Mission style can be a little confusing for its influences arise both from the Spanish Missions of southwest California and the revival of the American Arts and Crafts industry, primarily in upstate New York. Both the California and New York styles had in common the use of simple geometric shapes that would accentuate the pattern of the wood.

There were of course many artists and designers who played a part in creating the look and feel of the Mission style, but in furniture no one surpassed the influence of L&JG Stickley, the Stickley Brothers Gustav, Leopold, Albert and John George. Gustav and his brothers helped to develop a distinctive American style that would integrate furnishings and architecture. The goal was to live harmoniously with nature; a well-designed home could "make life better and truer by its perfect simplicity."
